no offense taken, but...

My former short-time colleague had casually remarked something that surprisingly, I didn't take an offense to. I would have or should have but I guess by the way he said it, he didn't really mean any harm.

The guy, who is a Web designer or whatever, had casually and, I believe, inadvertently remarked that "Madali lang yung ginagawa mo no (referring to my "writing" job), di tulad sa min mahirap kasi technical masyado" during our conversation about careers.

For lack of a better reaction, I just said, "yeah."

Which is true, to be honest. Well, writing is really easy compared to what the Internet guys are doing. At least for me it is. I don't have education, formal or otherwise, on programming programs or creating Web pages, save for the very basic HTML codes, so I am in complete agreement with what he said.

But... and here's the fun part, can you write?

We all have writing education. We all underwent basic grammar, spelling, and sentence formation classes. We were even forced to take it to the next level and finished a whole year or so of writing composition classes, as mandated by the school curriculum. However, not everyone can boast of being able to really "write."

Yeah, yeah, you can blog, you can write cheesy love letters, you can woo someone with your flawed sentence and "text speak" codes, but can you write? Really, really write?

See, that's the point. I don't have any education of Internet programming or Web applications thingamajigs so it's understandable that I'm not into that career path. I don't know if I have the patience for it, I certainly did not try long enough to know. But writing, I may not be the most outstanding writer earth has ever produced but I can get pretty wordy if I wanted to. And I bet my "techie" co-worker doesn't have the patience or even the skill for it. And to think he studied writing for years.

That is why I'm not insulted when he said that. I could have just gave it to him and said something witty just to remind him he was a bit off-track in his comment. But I just don't have the energy to slay a character that didn't even mean to be mean.

Same goes for other seemingly easy jobs out there. Like, say, a security guard, who doesn't seem to do anything but stand up for hours and check bags. Well, if it's that easy for you, then why don't you try it?

my favorite weather

It's signal number 3 in Manila, or so I've been told. Everything should have been perfect for my ultimate fantasy realization except for the lack of cable TV connection - the storm ruined it for me. I would have called the cable company to rant but as it happens, we are not really a subscriber, so to say.
