the film that was
When I was just a two year old toddler running in my fringes filled panty of a butt, a film about career girls worked its way to the box office. I don't know if it started the Makati is a posh place to work mentality but I'm guessing it did. I also don't know if it served as an eye opener for pinay office girls balancing career, family, and personal life but I'm pretty sure it did strike some nerves. How could it not if even 22 years later it did hit me somehow. I didn't watch the film when I was two but I chanced upon it just two weeks ago and I'm already 24 (do the math, I did it right). It was really hilarious (take note, not just funny, hilarious - some level higher than funny) seeing the M.B.D. (M's business district) looking so different. There was no underpass for the pedestrians, PBCom building's sign was a huge carinderia type board in its striking colors as opposed to its big metal letters of today, the cars were all box type and I doubt if those even had air conditioners in them. And the mall... there was no Glorietta then, no Greenbelt and I'm guessing SM wasn't the mall in the film where Ms. MIL's character shopped. Judging from the big bold styro signs, it must be Landmark. I'm pretty sure it is coz they haven't changed one bit about their signing styles. And the clothes! I thought we're in the decade where we retro the 80s? The only things closely familiar about their attire were the accessories. I can imagine myself wearing those big button earrings and the hair bows (only I'd wear the knot beneath my hair and not on top a la Minnie Mouse). But I cannot, for the love of humane fashion, even picture myself wearing those dull colored sacks they called office dress! Just imagine the horror!
That was the time when rebonding was never even heard of. Not that I asked the people who were consciously walking the earth in that era about their vast knowledge of the wonders of chemical hair technology. I just had one look at their really dry wavy hair and I got my answer. I think the only available service in the salon aside from haircut and manicure/pedicure (using cutex, of course) is the old fashioned perm. I'm not really sure about hair straightening but it's possible it was offered but only few are willing to take it. It was so funny because I had a double take as I touched my own hair. My God! I'm living in the 80s!
I could only laugh hard at the film as I watch how Mr. EM's character delivered his cheesy proposal to Ms. Galang. It was really cheesy! I still couldn't stop from smiling everytime I remember it. It was a feel good scene about a slutty secretary who won his boss' (and current target for her career stability) heart. I don't know if it is just too mababaw or it did have some profoundness that I cannot fathom. Because how can you fall in love that easily with a slut? Okay, don't get me wrong, I love Ms. CM's character. How could I not, she reminds me of Samantha of Sex & the City in her ability to not judge her friends except that she has no brains (no kidding) and uses men to retain her job (or get one). And I thought her vileness as a cunning sex temptress was, well, vile. But although she's no Vivian Ward of Pretty Woman (her reasons for seducing men were just for career stability), she's still a lovable character (if you love to hate sluts, that is). But come on, I thought EM's character as an executive was a smart one. But anyhow, that's how the script went. It was good in a way. Coz no matter how impossible and far fetch and corny it was, you can't help but smile at its silliness and wonder if by glimmer of a chance, however microscopic that is, that that would happen to you, wouldn't you wish the world all the flowers and rainbows and kisses it deserves? Now that was something I've been contemplating on for two weeks now. My brain can't seem to decide if I wanted it to happen to me or if it's still functioning properly to even think about it.
One thing in this movie that caught me: nostalgia. Don't ask me to explain how could a 2 year old at the time that movie took place even develop a sense of longing for something she did not even catch a glimpse of. I don't know. I just know that gave me something to ponder on when I'm on my way commuting to the now underpass filled MBD. And this may seem really corny and much, much cheesier than EM's proposal but it makes me real proud to be walking on the streets where thousands of professionals have walked before me. It makes me feel proud. Hihihi...

Disclaimer: I have naturally straight hair, I'm just still experiencing the aftermath of a hair perm gone awry episode.
Nota Bene: Another underpass is currently being built across Ayala Avenue fronting 6750 and Makati Tuscany.
